The Mombasa-Nairobi SGR has maintained safe operation for more than 1,800 days, carried 7.5 million passengers and shipped 19 million tons of cargo, making outstanding contributions to local economic and social development. In 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was raging across the continent, the railway strived to maintain 24-hour operation without interruption. In addition to normal cargo service, it also ensured a steady supply of bulk grain, pandemic control supplies, and other daily necessities to the inland regions of Kenya, which provided strong support to the local people in their fight against the pandemic. Apart from facilitating transportation, the railway has created 46,000 jobs for the local people since it was open to traffic, and provided employees with a broad platform for vocational and technical capacity building concerning modern railway transportation. Meanwhile, it has helped remove the transportation bottlenecks that impede Kenya’s development, injecting new vitality into tourism, agriculture and manufacturing industries of the country.
Over the past decade, China Eximbank has financed a large number of key projects in the fields of transportation, clean energy, telecommunication and vocational education in Kenya, contributing to the livelihoods of the local people and the long-term development of China-Kenya friendship. In the future, China Eximbank will further strengthen cooperation with Kenya and other African countries to effectively implement the nine programs proposed at the Eighth Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
